WE THOUGHT YOU MIGHT LIKE A GLIMPSE OF
WHAT HAS GONE ON THROUGHOUT THE YEAR
AND A LOOK AT SOME OF THE
GTWY 2019 HIGHLIGHTS

2019 WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR!

It is wonderful to be able to confirm another record year for GTWY - that’s 2 in a row!

In 2018 we were really pleased to find homes for a record number of 70 greyhounds …

IN 2019 THE NUMBER WAS 88!

We cannot thank enough all of the individuals and families who have given forever homes as pets to 88 retired greyhounds - and hope that they and their hounds enjoy great times together.

WE HAVE LOVED WELCOMING PEOPLE TO OUR SUNDAY 'DROP IN' SESSIONS

GREYHOUNDS TO MEET

Through the year we have had our monthly Sunday Drop In sessions at Emley.  These have been really warm and welcoming events for current and prospective homers alike - a happy environment in which to ‘talk greyhounds’, which has led to at least one homing after every single session -

Those greyhounds who are already pets do a great job of convincing the newcomers!  Well done to every one!

TREATS FOR PEOPLE TOO!

And there was a cracking festive session in December, with special Christmas raffle, Christmas treats, mulled wine - and another greyhound finding its forever home!

AND BEING PART OF THE COMMUNITY

People and greyhounds have been welcomed into the Emley community; and we once again joined in with the Remembrance Day service in the village.

NEW FOR 2020

Following on from the really positive feedback from Emley, we are looking forward to a new venture  in 2020 -

a second monthly Drop In session at Ferrybridge.

This will offer the same GTWY welcome in a different area.

The new venue has plenty of space and is super dog friendly - so there will be plenty of greyhounds to meet and lots of greyhound chat.

If there is anyone interested in helping out at either of these sessions - Do get in touch!  You don’t even need to have a dog …  There will be teas to be made, cakes to be provided, raffles to be organised …!  Something for everyone.

THERE HAVE BEEN MANY HIGHLIGHTS AND FIRSTS

PETS AT HOME & JOLLYES

We have been part of the Pets at Home programme of Support Adoption for Pets.  Volunteers have been in store at Crown Point with their greyhounds on many occasions through the year, doing that all important promotion of greyhounds as pets.
And there have been similar volunteer people and greyhound sessions at Jollyes, in both Halifax and Keighley.
Our greyhounds waiting for homes have benefitted enormously from both of those connections, with the regular donations of food, treats and toys which have been delivered throughout the year.

NO SHORTAGE OF GOODIES

Our greyhounds waiting for homes have benefitted enormously from both of those connections, with the regular donations of food, treats and toys which have been delivered throughout the year.

VOLUNTEER GREYHOUNDS
WORKING HARD!

AND A VAN FULL OF GOODIES

SOME ENJOYABLE FIRSTS

We had our first ever GTWY paper quiz which got the year off to a head-scratching start - and raised over £500

And there was a venture into the world of entertainment - a music night with Woody the Stringman, who so generously waived his usual fee, gave everyone a great evening and helped to raise much more

AND NEW SUPPORTERS

And later in the year there was a surprise invitation to be the chosen charity of the Leeds Whisky Fellowship, leading to a donation of over £750

MAGAZINE COVER GREYHOUNDS AND
NEW FRIENDS

GTWY has been supported all year by the Thornton Directory and we have, in return, taken part in events in Thornton ...

AND OUR VERY OWN CHRISTMAS TREE

... not least of which was having a tree in the lovely Christmas Tree Festival at St James Church.

KIRKSTALL ABBEY MARKETS + SHOWS

Every month between March and November we have had our stall at the Kirkstall Abbey Market.

And there have been shows to attend with the GTWY gazebo - all with volunteers on hand to talk to everyone &, in the case of the volunteer greyhounds, get plenty of petting and treats!

Keep an eye on the Events page and our Facebook page to see where we can be found in 2020.

CLYDE'S  DIARY

A novel thread this year has been Clyde’s Diary on our website - Clyde, formerly known as Declan, was homed in early September, and gave us a weekly diary update about his progress in his new home - pointing out some of the ups and downs involved in settling into home life.  He hopes that some of his greyhound insights might be helpful to others …

AND SOMETHING ELSE NOVEL .....

Some GTWY volunteers and greyhounds got thoroughly soaked while doing our ‘bit’ for the Tour de Yorkshire, which passed the gates of the kennels.  Hopes of a mention for homing greyhounds were dashed - but spirits weren’t!

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO KATH

There was a special tribute in May with the presentation by the Lions & Lionesses Organisation, at their Centennial Awards Evening, of a Service to the Community Award to Kath Armitage.  This was in recognition of her amazing commitment to the cause of greyhound homing and welfare over nearly 20 years!  Well done - and very well deserved!
Kath continues to lead from the front, works unbelievably hard in the interests of greyhounds and their people and is an inspiration to GTWY!

AND THANKS TO THE 'OTHER KATH'

The ‘other’ Kath at the kennels and her lovely crew have continued with their great job of keeping our greyhounds happy and healthy whilst they wait for their homes - getting to know every dog as an individual and meeting their needs; nurturing those who need ‘bringing on’ and helping others to learn the good manners they will need as pets.  Every greyhound there enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner and treats at Christmas - but every day matters at the kennels - and they get the same care and commitment all year round.

OF COURSE, IN JULY, THERE WAS THE SHOW!

THE NORTHERN GREYHOUND GATHERING 2019
AT WETHERBY RACECOURSE

A GREAT DAY!

The Northern Greyhound Gathering was again a great success - &, fortunately, held on a rather cooler day than the scorcher in the previous year.

GREYHOUNDS AND SHOPPING!

Lots of lovely greyhounds turned out - congratulations to Eric for winning 'best in show’ for the 2nd year running!  And there were so many tempting shopping opportunities, from dog collars to gin, or children’s books to doggy massage.

NORTHERN GREYHOUND GATHERING 2020

Now for the NGG 2020 …  Planning is already under way and stallholders are booking their spots - so get Sunday, July 12th in the diary & head to Wetherby Racecourse for a great greyhound day out!

Keep in touch with all of the news and updates about the NGG 2020 by following our Northern Greyhound Gathering 2020 page on Facebook

SO MUCH SUPPORT!

So many individuals and groups have helped in so many ways and thanks are due to them all - people who have given duvets for bedding, raffle prizes, baking, charity months at work, donations to the bank account or into buckets at events and much more.
All of this effort helps to pay the bills and maintain the standards for the greyhounds still waiting for their homes.
Thank you for all of those efforts!

AND GREAT VOLUNTEERS

Special thanks have to go to the dedicated band of volunteers - human and greyhound - who have given so much time and energy to ‘the cause’ over the past year - spreading the word far and wide that greyhounds make great pets.

2019 HAS BEEN A GREAT YEAR FOR GTWY …
